A Rolex. A man’s love affair with his Rolex is possibly the only affair that his partner would award and even enjoy the chase with him. In discussing this love affair, we will argue all elements that have led to this global, seducing effect on men.
Rolex watches are constructed with purpose:
With each collection, it is built on one pillar of purpose. This may be as simple as a function or as wrist adornment. For example, the Milgauss was originally made for scientists who worked in highly electro-magnetic nuclear labs, in the 1950’s. This watch was made to withstand one thousand “gauss” (the measurement for Magnetism). Another example is the GMT-Master that was designed with the pilot in mind, as it shows two time zones.
Detail is the difference:
The refinement in each timepiece is what makes the Rolex so personal. With each subtle difference, noticed by the wearer, it adds value and memories. These small, almost insignificant details may increase the value of the watch. For example the Rolex with the “Bart Simpson’ dial. Where the Rolex crown, just above “Rolex” on the dial, had points that were relatively stubby and flat (like Bat Simpson’s hair).
Rolex is made of 904L steel. Now that means nothing to you unless you know that most watch brands use a stainless steel called 316L and that due to the use of the 904L, the Rolex is abnormally durable. For instance, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Chronometer that was worn by Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay on the first summit of Mount Everest in 1953, is still in working condition today and displayed at the Beyer Watch and Clock Museum in Zürich.
Rolex can be dressed up or down:
The versatility of these watches are endless. Changing the entire look and feel of a Rolex just by adding a different strap, whether it be an Italian leather or nylon strap.
A Rolex, once built, has a lifetime of accumulating value. Vintage watches more so but this can also be the case for Rolex’s in good condition. This is one of the elements that excite wearers as they are technically wearing an investment. Tangible. Admirable. Enjoyable. We don’t know of many other investments with these qualities.
No reason better or worse, a Rolex really is a masterpiece of a timepiece, worthy of our awe and destined to be sought after. Well done, Mr Hans Wildorf. You gave us something worth losing our hearts on.
