Standing the Test of Time

Rolex.  The world’s most valuable watch brand.  A brand that enjoys an unrivalled reputation for quality and expertise.

Almost everyone knows what a Rolex watch is, what it looks like and what it means to have one on your wrist. What the vast majority of people won’t know is the story behind a Rolex and the detailed intricacies behind one of the world’s most well-known, luxury watch brands.

With many watch brands around the world, not many of them are as highly regarded as Rolex. You have heard of it even if you have never heard anything about Omega or Breitling, or even Patek Philippe.

But the question is: why is Rolex so popular and successful? What makes it stand out from the crowd?

Firstly, we regard the status of fame and recognition that has been established over years. Fundamentally there are two types of Rolex customers – those who know everything they can know about a luxury timepiece, and then those who know very little. The experts buy Rolex for its extremely high quality. They are very interested in craftsmanship and having the best all-round watch for daily wear. Other Rolex customers don’t know much about watches, only that Rolex is the best. For them the primary motivator is this: if you’re going to wear a watch, it’s got to be a Rolex. And what a huge compliment this is to the brand.

Did you know that Rolex has its own science lab? That they have an in-house foundry that makes all their own gold? Or even that it takes about a year to make a Rolex watch?

And did you know that the word “Rolex” has no particular meaning? There are many theories and speculations as to why Hans Wilsdorf came up with “Rolex”. What is known, however, is that Wilsdorf wanted a name that would be easily pronounced in various languages (and probably not meaning anything so that it can be original).

Another factor contributing to the success of this iconic brand is the stability in value that Rolex retains. Thanks to a combination of the finest materials, best manufacturing practices, and timeless design elements seen in Rolex watches, these timepieces are among the best when it comes to holding value. If you have never heard of Paul Newman’s Cosmograph Daytona, this is the perfect example of the value retained by a Rolex, with this piece auctioning for a whopping $17 million dollars! And yes, this particular timepiece had a celebrity provenance but even a vintage Rolex without such provenance tends to hold its value better than other brands—especially if it’s a limited edition, a reference that has been discontinued, or anything that is otherwise difficult to get.

Then comes the fact that Rolex invented the Oyster, then the Perpetual Rotor and just continued to invent again and again including record breaking waterproof features. We are constantly in awe!

Rolex is a universe of its own: respected; admired; valued; and known across the globe. … Rolex models stand as investments rather than purchases and for this reason, we are true fans and ambassadors of this iconic brand.

There is a reason why this beautiful brand with its scrupulous attention to detail is also referred to as “The Crown”.  Well, it definitely is our version of “crowning glory”…
